At first mention, William Tecumseh Sherman and Susie King Taylor may seem like an odd historical pairing. The former is a well-known Union General of the Civil War. Not without controversy, he fought in many battles and is probably most remembered for his March to the Sea. The Green-Meldrim House served as his headquarters during the campaign, and it was here that he met with prominent African American leaders, granting Blacks education and land for the first time. Susie King Taylor is not as well-known but no less important. An African American nurse during the Civil War, she was a domestic servant for the Greens after the war and worked tirelessly to advance education and civil rights. They are both remembered here as examples of “top-down” and “bottom-up” history respectfully.
The house is only accessible on a guided tour, and the days and times vary but are found on the website. I visited at 1:00PM, starting in the entryway with a description of the beginnings of the building. A visit to the reception hall followed, with historical coloring provided verbally by our docent and visually with pictures from Harper’s weekly magazine. The formal dining room and kitchen rounded out the first floor, and we then segued upstairs via the stairwell and signature dome. The first floor included a good fifteen minutes in Sherman’s library, as well as stops in the adjoining drawing room and the bridal suite/bedroom. A pause at Sophie’s Shop finished the forty-five-minute experience.
In summary, this is a worthwhile visit with the tour focusing more on the historical events related to the house more than the actual architecture of the building. While General Sherman takes center stage, the other historical figures mentioned are numerous and span over 150 years: Coco Chanel, Steve Forbes, Charles Green, John and Jackie Kennedy, Colin Powell, Margaret Thatcher, etc. The addition of Susie King Taylor is a long overdue and welcome supplement to the attraction, providing a more realistic picture of the time and taking a detour from the classic (“top-down”) version of history that was so prevalent in the 20th century.
A recommended and worthwhile visit.

The dosants were quite informative and brought a unique perspective and oratory to this amazing house. If you arrive at 10am, you may be lucky to get a private tour as I did!

We loved the house. It was the tour guides thoroughly made me angry. We got there at 3:00 PM on a Saturday. The 3 girls argued back and forth on who was going to take us on the tour, one said she did the last one, one said can one of you take the top floor. I was about to get my money back when another couple came in. It ruined my enjoyment of the house. Not sure if the girl that ended up doing the tour was new because she did get confused a couple times.

The story of the owners and how much care they took in choosing each piece inside this home only adds to the tales of historical events that took place here. General Sherman's stay is the most significant draw to the house, but there's so much more. The craftsmanship and architecture of the house are simply stunning.

Great house fascinating history. Tour guide a bit long-winded. A group that started after us finished before us. People are on busy schedules and things need to be kept tight.

If you love the charm of the old south mixed with the historical significance of a single location, this is a must see. This is the house offered to General Sherman to be his headquarters while staying in Savannah on his famous march to the sea campaign. In no small way did this gesture by Mr. Green, likely spare Savannah from the destruction of other parts of Georgia during the campaign. Listening to the history of the home and war time usage as a headquarters was very educational. The tour guide we had was excellent

We’d rate this as one of the best home tours in Savannah. A lot of history here! The tour guides will fill you in on very interesting facts about the owners of this luxurious mansion and General Sherman, who was invited to use the house as his headquarters at the end of the Civil War. The tour guides are truly excellent!

Stunning house with priceless treasures and informative guides. Surprisingly, the house and its furniture has been kept very similar to the way it was over a century ago. Fascinating stories of the history that took place here. Welll done tour and so enjoyable!

Don’t miss this tour! By far our favorite house tour in Savannah! The property is today the same as it was originally. The docents are wonderful, the tour is so in depth and fascinating, the family history very well documented and displays always enhancing, especially now that they’ve procured nearly 100 pieces of the home’s original furnishings from the family!!! I can’t say enough good things about the care of the house and the docents who guided us. They love the house and the history. Make sure you go to the church connected with the home and view the largest pipe organ in Savannah! The docents there are just as welcoming and knowledgeable! Thank you Mary, Doug, Frank, and the elegant lady of our first floor home tour that I missed your name!

I see house is closed on Tuesday for a church function. Open any other days that week?

Where is the entrance located?
Escrita el 25 de julio de 2017
Agree. The entrance is on the south side across from the church.

Our tour lasted about 45-60". I guess it depends on the numbers of questions the docents get during the tour. The size of the group would have a bearing on that too, as it takes longer to maneuver the group through the house.
