It had been sometime, since we did more than drive through the area, once known as “Storyville.” In December, on a gorgeous Winter day, while strolling the length of the French Quarter, on Rampart St (the lakeside boundary of the Quarter), we decided to look at the redevelopment of Storyville.
Basically, Storyville is an almost square twenty blocks, and runs from Iberville St to St Louis St, and Basin St to Claiborne St. It encompasses two famous cemeteries, St Louis #1, and #2.
Once, the area was quite grand, and famous for its houses of prostitution. That changed in 1917, when the Secretary of War, and the Secretary of the Navy, declared it too close to a US military installation, during WWI. Having thrived since its “creation” in 1897, it was gone.
During its heyday, it also turned out, or gave a spotlight to many of the jazz greats from that time.
We knew the area at probably its rundown worst, and even driving past on Basin St (named for the New Basin Canal, which once ran along the downriver edge of Storyville), one would lock their doors.
Now, the area is experiencing a resurgence, but not with bawdy houses this time. Just to the upriver side, along Canal St, the development is most prominent, with the remodeling and reopening of the Saenger Theater, and the condominiums across Basin St, and behind the theater.
The Storyville area has been immortalized in the TV series, “Treme,” which is the name for the broader area.
On this visit, we did not do a tour of either of the St Louis Cemeteries, but have done both – however at a time before tours were required.
We walked past Lulu White’s Saloon, named for a famous bawdy house madam, from the active days of Storyville. The Vietnam War Memorial is right along the Basin St edge, and this was new to us. Everywhere we looked, there was renovation, and construction, and the area is slowly returning to its past glory. It had definitely come a very long way, from the days that we would avoid the area, any way possible.
After a little detour, we were back to Rampart St, to head to a “Champagne bar,” but it was closed on this Monday.

Made famous to younger generations as the undesirable part of town in Pretty Baby - it is a different part of NO compared to a century ago. Interesting to wander through and let your imagination visualise what it was.

We loved hearing about the history of New Orleans, a city of so much culture. The history of Storyville was very interesting and unique. A town made for the undesirables. Worth the trip and learning about it.

We were seated promptly. Someone came over to let us know that he would be right over with water. He came with water and took our drink order. While waiting for our drinks, our waiter came over to take our food order. His name is Timothy and he was extremely pleasant. We all ordered fish. I had trout, my husband sword fish, our friends grouper and shrimp. All our food was delicious. We ordered the special dessert of bread pudding with white and brown chocolate sauce with vanilla ice cream. Words can't describe how good it was. My friend licked the bowl. My husband had cheese cake. It was like no cheese cake I have ever had and I have had cheese cake in many restaurants.
Our only negative was that it was very noisy.
It was one of the few restaurants that we passes in the French quarter that was busy.
In all it was a wonderful meal.

Storyville was demolished in the 30's and 40's and replaced with a terrible housing project, the Iberville Housing Development. Tourists: DO NOT venture into the Iberville Projects! And be very careful in the cemetaries around the projects.

Want to get some good Creole but the carnival season prices were a little steep for us, so we settled for a bowl of gumbo. It was very taste but not what we think of real as cajan gumbo.

A must see...at the Parlour in Storyville. Very historic area, and the best Blues/Jazz in town. World renowned artists. Be sure to check out Marva Wright. She is unbelievable.

Real fine jazz by New Orleans musicians who perform nightly at Storyville District. The club is at 125 Bourbon St. (not in the old Storyville area). The venue is casual and you are up close to the music. Delicious drinks and Brennan recipes can be served while listening. Nice place with reasonable prices.
