This was a real eye opener...real history not what we have been told and read about..Th woman doing the lecturing was full of facts and history and a joy to listen to...You really should make this a stop and look at the articles, artifact and just plain get articulate about Black history in our country...Great Museum of Truth

This museum is smaller than some but the pieces here all tell a story. Our guide Kim was incredible and was extremely passionate about the pieces as she guided us through the museum. Will definitely go back.

I had an opportunity to visit the McKenna Museum of Art recently with my best friend, Cathy Hughes and a group of loved ones. We received a tour from the museum's docent, Kim and one of the founders, Dr. Dwight McKennastopped in for a bit to share his insights about how he started the collection and stories about some of the artists featured. Kim gave a was extremely knowledgeable and the collection is breathtaking. As a long time art collector, I was very impressed with the diversity of the artifacts, documents and art that share some of the history of American creativity. Works from Henry Ossawa Tanner to Romare Bearden, this collection, and not to mention the amazing building that it is housed in, is a fabulous place to learn more about New Orleans, the United States and in particular, the contributions of people of color. I will visit again and take guests. Do treat yourself to an uplifting and enchanting experience. Dyana Williams

Well, this was disappointing. My family was in town visiting from overseas and they really wanted to check out this museum. I called and scheduled an appointment for the six of us then later called back to confirm the appointment, but when we showed up for the tour, the gate was locked. When I tried calling, I got a message saying the voicemail box was full. And when I tried emailing, I never heard back. As it just so happened, someone else came by and said they, too, had been trying to see the museum, but every time they came, nobody was there to let them in. Moral of the story: You can't count on these people. Even if they confirm they are going to be there, there's a good chance they won't show. You're better off checking out some of the other museums around town.

This stunning house is filled with gorgeous pieces of art. What I liked is that there was a great range of art, some very recent pieces included. It also highlighted many pieces from up and coming New Orleans artists. A definite must see if coming to visit. Also looks like a great venue to rent for an event.

Before you travel to the McKenna Museum, check their website and look for special events, especially the opening to an exhibition. They do an amazing job with their exhibitions geared to children and also life in New Orleans. The staff is very welcoming. The gallery space is very well spaced, and there are a lot of works produced by famous artists as well as amazing local artists

I visited the McKenna Museum on a Saturday. It has a great selection of well-done, thought-provoking African-American art. I particularly liked the slice-of-life photographs of Dr. Nikki Brown, which attempt to counter the negative way African-Americans are often portrayed in the media. The days and times are limited, but it's worth a visit, definitely.

My husband and I happened upon this museum while touring the Garden District. We were admiring the renovations of the beautiful homes in the area and literally stumbled upon this TREASURE. There is an obvious tone of loving dedication and committment to the community that you feel when you walk into this huge house that feels like a home in spite of the size. Diverse genre of pieces, periods and artists represented who express the true diversity of the African American people, perspetive and journey. The Curator, Jennifer was so knowledgeable and spent time with my husband and I in discussion about the mission, vision and goals of the museum. She was able to share her knowledge about many of the artists and sold us on the importance of the sustainability of this museum. This is a MUST GO SEE for anyone traveling to this area. Housed within the Treme community, this treasure is a pleasure to visit to catch some of the local artistry, culture and history. Housed in a charming old mansion, (with its Nawlin's southern French flavored architecture) offers the charm of being able to really appreciate the exhibits in a quiet and beautiful setting. Exhibits continue in two buildings off the back, where you can also sit outside in the charming garden and floral surroundings. Check times - not open all days... but well worth the trip if you are seeking Black history in the city. Also note - other walkable African American sites in the area, see them while you are in there... they can direct you at the visitors desk where the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.

During our recent visit to NO in mid September, the McKenna Museum was on our list of things to do. Being fully aware of the Museum's limited days/hours of operation, I planned accordingly. On Thursday we got up early to have bkfst in the Garden District and did some sightseeing before we walked over in the sweltering heat to enter the Museum. At which time we found the gate/doors to be locked and no one in sight (with the exception of a few shady characters walking by). As we nervously stood, sweated & waited for someone to open up the museum, i called the number to be sure they were still in business. The answering machine picked up with no mention that they would be closed (or late) on that day. I left a message and several hours later the owner called to say that she had appointments that morning and "sorry she missed us". I understand it is a family owned business, but that is poor customer service and highly unprofessional in my opinion. She said she would be open "tomorrow" at the normal time if we wished to stop by. I did not want to make another trip to the Garden District and decided that it was their loss - and not ours. Oh well!
