The view of the city is quite breath-taking in this neighborhood. The architecture of the homes, businesses, and churches is extremely interesting.

So much history in Church Hill and the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood which shares borders. But very sites, other than the main ones, are poorly marked and if it wasn't for the google searches i did before I went I would have missed a lot. Also Do not trust the cabs( worst town for reliable cab service that I have ever been in, even the hotel clerks will tell you this) if you're out after 10 pm, very dangerous town to be in after the sun goes down.

Church Hill is the oldest/most historic neighborhood in Richmond and the people are great. There are many parks and they're great with wonderful views not to mention all the restaurants. There is Dutch and Company, Rosevelt, Hill Cafe, Anthony's on the Hill, Patrick Henry Pub, Liberty, Buzzy's coffee house, and many more on the Hill. Bookbinders is just a few blocks away + Rockets Landing is only a few blocks away too. There is great public transport, bike paths, uber and lift are very fast, + plenty of on-street parking in most of the neighborhood.
Not to mention some of the most beautiful houses in Richmond outside historic Monument Ave.

The Church Hill neighborhood was one of our favorite areas of Richmond. Beautiful, historic homes, parks, and monuments, as well as plenty of restaurants and shops make this an interesting place to visit.

Church Hill, also known as the St. John's Church Historic District, encompasses 100 acres of land on the east side of Richmond, Virginia, that includes several historical sites, structures, monuments and parks dating to the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Located at the eastern terminus of Broad Street, metropolitan Richmond's major east-west thoroughfare, it is bounded roughly by 22nd Street, Marshall Street, 32nd Street, Main Street, Franklin Street and Williamsburg Avenue and includes such neighborhoods as Union Hill, Chimborazo, Fairmount, Peter Paul and Woodville. Its two most historical sites are St. John's Episcopal Church, where Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech, and Chimborazo Park, where the largest Civil War hospital was located. The area, laden with row houses of the 1800s with cast iron porches and floor-to-ceiling windows, also includes the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument; Libby Hill Park, which provides a panoramic view of the James River and downtown Richmond; the Elmira Shelton House, home of poet Edgar Allan Poe's childhood sweetheart; the Dr. John Adams house, the earliest surviving double house in Richmond; the Pohlig Brothers Building, a former tobacco warehouse that was leased as a hospital for Alabama troops during the Civil War; the John Woodward house, which dates to 1782 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and Jefferson Park at the corner of North 21st Street and East Marshall Street, which arguably offers the best view of Richmond's city skyline. Former VIrginia Governor Douglas Wilder, the first African American to be elected governor of a state in this country, was born and raised in Church Hill. The neighborhood experienced serious decline in the 1950s but the Historic Richmond Foundation was established in 1956, marking the formal beginning of a preservation movement in Richmond.

I grew up in Richmond when it wasn't popular to go to Church Hill, except to visit St. John's Church or the Poe Museum. It's become gentrified now and, for the good or the bad, it's a lovely place to drive through. Many of the houses have been renovated and are historical in nature. The vista of the river from AP Hill Park is gorgeous. But don't St. John's Church where Patrick Henry made his "liberty or death" speech".

Some of the best things in Richmond are free. Take the time to drive through the Church Hill neighborhood. Start with St John's Episcopal Church where Patrick Henry gave his "Give me Liberty or Death Speech" Admire the row houses from the 1800s with the cast iron porches and floor to ceiling windows that are indictive of Richmond. Or eat at one of the restaurants in the area such as "The Hill Café"
The neighborhood screams history. Benedict Arnold led the British troops into Richmond down Broad Street. Chimborazo Park is where the huge Civil War hospital was located. Even Edgar Allen Poe's girlfriend lived on Church Hill. Drive through the neighborhood to enjoys the views of Richmond and the wonderful history of the neighborhood.
