My wife and I visited this one-of-a-kind facility one afternoon in early November last year during a two-night, two-day stay in Tucson. We had, of course, purchased tickets several weeks prior. The necessity of that was driven home when we saw a number of people being denied entry to our tour because they didn't already have valid tickets (they actually had tickets for the same time slot on a different day). If they had been allowed to join, the tour group would have almost doubled in size.

This tour should be fascinating for anyone even remotely interested in how the largest mirrors in the world for some of the largest telescopes in the world are made. The tour starts out in a lecture room where you get a slide presentation. Then it moves to the telescope-making facility proper, where you can, if you are lucky, view mirrors in a number of different stages of completion.

We lucked out and they were working at the time on mirrors for the Giant Magellan Telescope. That telescope will use a total of seven 8.4-meter mirrors, which is the largest that the mirror lab can make. One mirror was "baking" in a huge rotating oven, which is spun in order for the glass to reach the appropriate parabolic shape as the once-molten glass slowly cools. The other mirror we saw was being polished on a huge rotating platform.

Our tour guide also showed us the equipment the lab uses to optically test the mirrors and the equipment and area they use to pack each mirror up for shipment. Apparently, the 8.4-meter maximum size is dictated by the width of US highway underpasses.

If you have any interest in astronomy, this tour is not to be missed. Even if you don't have such an interest, the sheer scale of the mirrors being made and the length of time each takes to make should impress you.

What an interesting presentation and tour! I learned about the exciting advances in mirror construction and the enhanced advantages they provide. The presentation would be very interesting to high school students and all adults.
It is a privilege to have this facility here in Tucson.

Just went yesterday as a party of four. We all loved it. When the guide said we would start with a 40 min talk on what the Lab does I was wondering what I had signed up for. But wow I learned so much and the speaker was terrific. He explained technical issues with common language. The talk actually was the highlight of the tour for me not to say the visit to the lab was not great. We really enjoyed our 1 1/2 hour visit and highly recommend it. Even if you are not a science buff you will learn a lot and be amazed at what they do at the Lab.

Mirrors are always in construction and changing what is being done to them through-out a year. Very informative

You don't have to be a scientist to understand and be impressed when you tour the Mirror Lab, the only place in the world to make this revolutionary new telescope mirror. The guides are excellent at telling the story of the mirror lab, how it works, and the importance to astronomy today and why that is important to our world today.. Our tour group was divided in half after the introduction, with two different guides, and both groups agreed, when we came back together that it was an excellent tour no matter your previous interest or knowledge. It is well worth your time in so many different ways.

We are an Astronomy Club in Northwest Tucson and typically take new members to the Mirror Lab once a year. The presentation, information, and technology never disappoints. This trip was a real treat in that one of our own club members, Larry Allen, was the docent. The introductory presentation, tour of the facility and explanation of the work currently in progress on GMT mirrors numbers 3 and 5 was exceptional. We know Larry for his interest in Astronomy but his work as a docent at the Mirror Lab is well beyond. However, it is the technology and work that the Mirror Lab staff is performing is the real story. This is beyond "state of the art" and performed at no other facility. The Lab's products are making ground-based Astronomical observation of our universe more precise. If you are in Tucson and have even a remote curiosity of the night sky, you need to visit the Mirror Lab and see the technology that opens the window for space exploration.

We had several friends who recommended this tour to us so we made reservations and went. It was great. Two undergrad students (Cassandra and Will) were our tour guides and they did a great job. We had no idea that U of A was such a center of astronomy, but they are obviously movers and shakers in this area. The tour starts in a lecture hall with some background info, then they take you on a tour so you can see the mirrors (actually the parabolic glass slabs that will be turned into mirrors) in different stages of fabrication. Then back to the lecture hall for info on recent and upcoming telescopes. They encourage questions, and the guides were obviously knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about their participation with the lab. It only takes about 90 minutes, so it won't consume a huge part of your day. Easy to find and get to (it's under the stands of the football stadium). My wife and I highly recommend it. We will do some more U of A astronomy related activities, e.g. the telescope on Mt Lemmon tour.

I knew nothing about mirrors/telescopes/astronomy but still found this really interesting. It's quite science based so if technical information isn't something you like don't go. There are lots of steps and crowded balconies but what you see is awe-inspiring. the docents are knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Not sure if there is a lower age limit but there probably is.

You MUST make reservations. Tour begins with explanation of telescopes and their use. Shows how special glass is placed in huge rotating furnace and spun for about 30 days to make the base shape. Then computerized grinding occurs. These mirrors cost millions of dollars and take years to create. You learn what goes into the telescope. Some stair climbing required. Probably too detailed for children under 10 unless they are interested in science.
