There are two things Portugal is known for, Port Wine and Cork. You can find a lot of places to learn about Port wine, but David is truly passionate about his work in the cork business, and he conveys that enthusiasm in the tour of his plant. I was amazed at how many ways the material (Do not call it "wood") can be processed and used. It is a remarkable material and learning about at Corticarte was a highlight of our trip. The belt I purchased in the shop is now a highlight of my wardrobe.

My wife and I were here on a Gate1 tour, coming from Tomar and headed to Evora.
It was quite a different experience for us - visiting Corticarte - Arte em Cortica, a cork factory in Azaruja. This was very interesting in how cork is harvested from the bark of a tree and processed into one of Portugal's major exports. First of all, the tree should not have its bark removed until it is at least 25 years old. Thereafter, it is every 9 years, its bark can be harvested again. However, the first 2 times the bark is harvested, the cork is not of good quality. Starting with the third harvest, the cork is very good to great quality, and used to make various products similar to what goods can be made from leather. As an example, a cork used for bottling wine has 8,000,000 cells! A bark tree’s life expectancy is 200-225 years.
We bought some souvenirs for our friends back home.

This visit to the transformation of cork is really interesting. They explain the process to us from A to Z. We are impressed by the variety of objects transformed as well as the different textures after transformation.

We arranged this tour via Facebook the evening before and David was very quick to respond. He was a great tour guide, funny and very knowledgeable with perfect English. It was fascinating to learn about the history of cork farming, the harvesting and processing and many uses. Would highly recommend and loved the range of products available in the shop afterwards

A wonderful tour of an amazing cork factory that was so interesting in so many ways. David Caeiro gave us an amazing view of the cork industry and the value of buying wine with a real cork. Somethings can not be interchanged and real cork is one of them. Come and visit this wonderful factory and be amazed at the products of cork beyond a wine bottle.

Cork crafts with magnificent pieces at a good price, it was the third time I bought pieces here, in particular the vases and dining bases.

We emailed and messaged on Facebook to reserve a tour, however, they didn't get back to us. We went anyways with the plan of purchasing items and if they had time we would love to hear about the process.
We arrived and were a little confused on where to enter. There is a big door that was open and men were working inside. This is where you enter. The store is located inside the building. The son ( we can't remember his name) was very friendly, and his English was excellent. He was just finishing a tour/helping check out a big tour group when we got there. We waited until he was done and he was happy to give us a tour. It was excellent! He was funny, and it was interesting to hear about cork trees and the process. We highly recommend going!

He mentioned to us that he has a hard time keeping up with reservation requests. I would recommend going and I would bet someone there would explain the process/give a tour.

David provided a factory tour to my wife and me responding to a "last minute" request we made the day before we arrived. We found the tour fascinating and David to be a most personable and professional tour guide. We learned about the growing and production of cork, purchased a few cool cork baseball hats, and received a nice cork branch walking stick that I needed due to a recent back injury. Overall a worthwhile experience that we highly recommend to all.

Highly recommend! You will have an entirely new sense of wonder about your wine cork plus have a great topic of conversation to go with that bottle of wine. Two of us stopped in Corticarte at the recommendation of our hosts in Evora. Davida was busy with larger tour groups that day and was kind enough take time in between to give us a private educational tour (lasts maybe 30 minutes - all within the same area). Davida's knowledge, humor, and passion of the cork tree and his family business of the cork manufacturing process was catching. We returned home wanting to tell everyone about this experience and our love of the amazing cork tree and product. We also returned home with LOTS of beautiful, functional, eco-friendly, lightweight cork gifts - much better selection and price than in tourist shops. When you visit and meet Davida, please let him know his friends from Hawai'i send their Aloha!

Our tour guide arranged a visit to Corticarte - Arte em Cortica, a pruducer of cork. Very educational where they explained the entire process. It is amazing how many things can be made from cork.

They have a small retail store selling only cork products made locally including shoe, hats, clothing, and household items.
