Bambelela is an amazing wildlife rescue & rehabilitation centre. Even though raising funding is a constant struggle the treatment all the animals receive is premium.
The accommodation available is wonderful. Everything is available for a nice stay. You will have to provide your own food/drink. We cooked on the braai for all our meals. There is a small shop on site for emergencies and souvenirs. The scenery is breathtaking and the random visits to your chalet area of wild animals is just an awesome experience. We will be visiting again in November 2025.

A peaceful sanctuary where broken Vervet monkey hearts are lovingly rehabilitated towards a second chance at freedom. Definitely worth your visit and support!

As a primate specialist, I can honestly say Bambelela does incredible work. I can't wait to go back!
jun de 2022
I was very impressed with Bambelela during my stay as a volunteer- my only regret is that I didn't get to spend longer volunteering with them! I am a zoologist with a focus on primatology and spend a lot of time volunteering with primate conservation organizations. I can admit that I am very judgmental and high standards when it comes to primate care. That being said, I have honestly never seen a facility with such an incredible rehabilitation and release program for vervet monkeys. They work closely with local communities and go great lengths to ensure that the troops are thriving once released. Admittedly, I am very against typical "pay to play" opportunities that many "sanctuaries" offer because of the negative impacts it has on primates' welfare and conservation goals as a whole. I was pleased with the way that Bambelela allows you to pay as part of the volunteer program or for a tour, but always prioritizes the primates' care over making money- something that is incredibly important, especially with vervets. I saw some negative reviews and wanted to be sure to leave a great one and to note that there is basically no profit for all reputable sanctuaries- Bambelela included. They depend on your money and donations to provide the best possible care- there is a constant demand on resources and especially after COVID, resources for many sanctuaries are extremely low. If you are able, please consider donating. If you hated it there, please consider donating to help improve. If you loved it- well we know you will be donating because how could you not after being there?! I know I did! :)
As for the accommodations- SO NICE!! Seriously, if you are just looking for a place to stay and learn a bit about conservation- this is your place. If you're looking to dive deep into primate conservation and care- this is your place. If you just like monkeys- THIS IS YOUR PLACE! The founder is incredibly kind and even went out of her way to arrange a trip to Kruger National Park for us during our stay. I can't wait to go back and visit.

Im reading through reviews and the person stating they are racist and saying the place is filthy and that the monkeys are in a horrible state is delusional. Clearly has no sense of nature.
Im currently staying here with family and its an amazing experience. Its more than sufficient. They are doing very well with limited resources. And the rehabilitation and reintroducing to the wild program is efficient and well practiced. They have extensive knowledge and is keen on educating on a specie that is greatly under estimated for their value in nature. I would suggest this as a getaway. The chalets are well kept. Guests are treated like VIP'S and they go out of their way to make you feel at home. Its a unique experience sitting on the patio and having a wild troop of monkeys calling this place home. Making coffee in the morning and being greeted by two young monkeys on the outside of the window sill grooming each other. Or walking around while swimming.
The kids love it here. And seeing other wild life like giraffe or zebras passing through on occasion is a nice addition. Also on the guided tour there is the golden oldies (the grumpy old men) and the special needs enclosure with guys that fell victim to human injustice. Getting chronic medication to ensure good quality of life. Also babysitting orphans babies and feeding up to every 15minutes during the nights. And this is 24hour duties
These guys understand nature and the conservation of it. I would gladly suggest this to anyone that want to observe a rehabilitation process that actually works.
Im happy to be a guest in the monkeys back yard. With family with kids as young as 4 years old. Even younger is safe.

We absolutely loved our stay at Bambelela. The work they do there for rehabilitating and releasing the velvet monkeys is absolutely worth a visit. They also give you a lot of information about the velvet monkeys and the problems they face. We stayed for the night in a very nice cottage where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful landscape and the animals. We loved our stay at Bambelela!

I really enjoyed working with the monkeys and the vibe of the location. These are passionate people that work with them.

The only positive was the monkeys. My son and I came to volunteer for a week and it was so bad we let after four days. The monkeys were adorable, we loved them and loved spending time with them. However: 1. The monkeys are terribly neglected. Except very basic needs, they get nothing. We understand that those going back into nature should have minimal human contact, but the elderly ones and handicapped ones will never go back. They have no toys and none of the employees pay any attention to them at all. For the monkeys that do go back into nature, no research or followup is being done to see if the program is effective and do the monkeys survive. They are being kept in captivity for almost five years, based on no actual research. There are no professionals among the staff who know anything about monkeys, their development or their behaviors. The employees are nice but totally ignorant. Care and medica, decisions are based on nothing professional. 2. The place is racist and quite upsetting. White employees all get decent housing. The employees of color all get paid less and live in caravans with no kitchens. It is appalling that in 2022 the board and founder think this is acceptable. 3. Though they advertise a very full and busy volunteer schedule, there is really only about 20 minutes a day of actual work. The rest of the time we played with the beautiful monkeys, but there is not actually any program in place. 4. The place is filthy. Not only where the monkeys are, but what should be the medical facility, the volunteer kitchen, the villas. We were terrified of getting food poisoning or bed bugs. There is no hand sanitizer anywhere and the soaps are watered down. Overall, we were so excited about this volunteer opportunity and left with a feeling of sadness for the monkeys and a need to decontaminate oursleves.

I really had a great experience it was very educational and fun, fell in love with the Vervet monkeys especially the handy capped. Felt very very sad and heartbroken when I left. How much is entrance fee as groups or individuals

Bambelela has overnight accommodations and openings for volunteers for longer stays. You would need to check with them for the cost for day visits. That's not what my wife and I did, so I don't know.

Hello! I'm set to volunteer at this rehabilitation centre and was wondering what vaccinations you would suggest having? I'm up to date on DTP and MMR but assume I need Rabies? Do I also need Thuroid and Hep A? Malaria? There's a 3 month waiting list at my doctors so have to go private and want to save money or it'll end up costing more than the trip for all the jabs!
Many thanks,
Kelly-Anne
