I was disappointed with my visit to Penang Hill today after all the hype I heard about it. Pretty much looks the same as my last visit about 8 years ago. Only new thing is The Habitat which was good. The rest is pretty much typical Malaysian mediocre attractions poorly built and maintained but overly priced. Dont visit the so called Dinasour or Toy story museum. It's just one dirty room with some big and small figurines. Staff managing the place were not very friendly.
No proper stroller or wheelchair access for children or the disabled around the hill.
The whole place looks quite dirty and poorly maintained.
Very disappointing as a good experienced management team would be able this a world class attraction.

Taking the train up and down itself is pretty quick: 4 minutes of loading everyone in, 6 minutes up. So a round trip for the train (and subsequently waiting for the next group to get on) is about 20 minute. The que to get in though was astronomical. Be prepared to wait for hours to get in on weekend as the crowd gets huge. In fact avoid that place on weekend public holidays or school holiday if you can. The wait is just not worth your time as there is only one operating train.
Other than that I've noticed the lack of safety precautions given to passengers. Passengers standing up do not have enough hand rails or poles to hold on incase of an emegency, or when the train hits an abrupt stop. In my opinion it feels like they are trying to squeeze as many people as they could into the train, making the trip ride rather uncomfortable for people who are agoraphobic .

What once must have taken the beet rich a long time, that is getting away from the oppressive heat to the top of the hill, is now a very fast and inexpensive railcard away. Not to be missed, extremely well organized and not too busy during the week. The size would indicate large crowds on weekends

Well worth a visit fur the stunning views from the top. Very busy when we visited, so worth paying the extra for the fast line, as minimal waiting and straight on the funicular train, both ways. Top tip, just follow the footsteps, otherwise it's not clear where you go. Staff all very helpful however. Yes, at the top it is all very touristy but just ignore that and go for the views and the cooler air.

A very touristy place, with plenty of boring attractions that charge you money. The ride to the top is worth the price and view from top great if not cloudy.Otherwise not much really to do,in less you want to waste your money.

This is a must do trip for many reasons including a ride on the longest funicular railway and spectacular views.
You can book train tickets online or at the ticket hall at Lower Station.
Having boarded the train, often packed in like sardines, 5mins later you're at the top (used to take 45mins in the old train!)
Once up top you have great views and various attractions aswell as numerous places to get food & drink.
3 things you must know:
Get there early as less crowded and less hot (think funicular starts running at 630am)
Don't be all British about queuing to get on the train because every man, woman, child and dog will push in front of you or around you to get on the train first so just put your head down and go for it like the locals do. No one will think bad of you but they will wave at you from the train laughing if you're still politely queuing!
Visit The Habitat, it costs pennies and is well worth a walk round.
Oh, one more thing, don't feed the monkeys or dogs...

After taking the funicular railway to the top of the hill you get a great view of George Town and the strait, including Penang Bridge. Plenty of places to visit when up there and some nice food and beverage outlets.

((Readers - I have gone up there Thrice! Alone, with my partner, and with parents. Once on a PH, once on a weekend, once on a normal working day afternoon. Hence I can give you these details))
Bukit Bendera, as it is known in Malay, is no doubt a Must See place in Penang.
Whilst the mountain is spectacular, and the views are phenomenal, you are, after all, in Malaysia and hence this will help you plan better;
1) DO NOT GO THERE ON WEEKENDS ! No matter when you go it is chaotic and the ticking queues are painfully-Long. But weekends are just madness. Unless you get there at 3 or 4 pm, and decide to have dinner and come back down at 8 or 9pm. Allocate at least 1 hour to get the tickets and board the tram. Another 40-50 minutes to get the tram back down. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON FAST LANE / VIP lines, they are more than double the fare, with minor time saving.
2) The waiting areas are NOT conducive for Older people and little kids. It’s hot, crowded and with very limited benches to sit on (which, inevitably will be occupied with local families, just hanging out and eating. They are always eating!).
3) Boarding the Tram also causes a bit of a rush, and as with all things in Malaysia, there is no Proper line or Q or announcement. Everyone “thinks” by rushing in they will get a good seat / view. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GOOD VIEW. The tram cars are packed with people, and you can see the tree lines going up and down.
4) Once on top of the Hill, The once beautiful, colonial retreat is FULL of vendors and tours that have ruined the place, and Penang Hill Corporation seems to NOT care. It’s just any other commercial hub, and soon, at this rate, will be filthy too. There are Just sooooo many little little shops and tourist-ty shacks, it kills the beauty of the majestic appeal of this once serene hill. It still has great spots, but filled with unstructured touts.
5) There is ONE public toilet on the hill, and it’s 50-60 steps down and back up again. No wheelchair or stroller access !
6) There is a really good Restaurant up on the hill - DAVID BROWN. They have great views, menu, drinks.
Don’t waste your time and money at the other smaller cafès, they are overpriced and crap food.
So, yes you must go Penang Hill, it is a spectacular hill, and the 6500 feet journey in 4 minutes is just superb !
But, Be ready, be patient, be prepared for chaos and pushing and touts.
HOPE PENANG HILL COMPANY DOES SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PLACE (besides just making money out of it!)
