Great ride with a variety of scenery, from native bush to rural Waikato, to cityscapes and llama's! Paved all the way, you won't need a mountain bike. We cycled it over two days, used Riverside Adventures for the great shuttle from Ngaruawahia to Karepiro where we started the trail. We slept overnight in Hamilton at Argent Motor Lodge which is 5 minutes from the trail (highly recommended) and they had a garage to lock up the bikes.

Two days was a great way to do the ride. Thank you to the trust which built and maintains this epic ride.

We rode the river ride from Cambridge to Ngaruawahia, leaving around 10.30am arriving 3ish. The trail is well maintained, being a 3m wide concrete path for nearly all the distance. Some beautiful views, including of the river and the properties adjacent. Don't be fooled that the trail is without challenges - no tricky technical riding skills required, but there are regular short sharp climbs up and down the river banks.

However the trail signage, especially when heading in the downstream direction is atrocious. With a couple of diversions in place at present, expect to be directed off trail and then find no markers to lead you back (at least in the downstream direction). It would be simple to stencil some markers on the trail every few km and where the track branches, but alas. Sometimes the signs point in ambiguous directions, but mostly it's just a lack of guidance for riders. Maybe it works better for riders in the opposite direction. There's also very few km markers or advice of cafes etc. Near Ngaruawahia we encountered a motorbike, riding at high speed on the trail. Extremely dangerous.

We rode the Hamilton to Ngāruawāhia return section and hired bikes from River Riders in Hamilton which is just across the road from access points to the pathway. This was a highlight of our stay in Hamilton. It look us around 3-3.5 hours to complete, with a short stop of five minutes in Ngāruawāhia and continuous cycling in between, so if you don’t need to stop often and cycle at a reasonable pace, a half day (4 hour) bike hire will work if you do the same section. It was about 42 total. We used standard bikes, not electric. The cycleway was in great condition, only a few steeper sections where you are advised to dismount. A few small sections are wooden boardwalk and these can be slippery. There’s plenty of signage so you won’t get lost and from memory there were no on-road sections. Toilets are available at various points along the cycleway.

Awesome bike ride along the Waikato river. Rode from Ngaruawahia to Cambridge and my first time on an electric bike - this made a big difference for my fitness (basically lack of)level. Really good eye opening scenery and the ride has been so well constructed for riders and family. Had breaks at Hamilton gardens and the Punnet Café along the way which added to the adventure. Heaps of other places for picnics. Definitely worth a visit and you can segment the ride in to smaller sections.

Did the Hamilton to Ngaruawahia cycle trail ride around 16 months ago, finally got to do from Hamton to Lake Karapiro section of the Te Awa trail last month, parked in Hamilton Gardens and rode out to Cambridge and then onto Lake Karapiro dam and back- around a 68 km easy E-bike ride. A couple of hilly parts and the odd switch backs, so e-bikes certainly do help us oldies. Easily accessible and well built trail , majority concreted. A few boardwlked parts with netting which may get slippery come winter. But well sign-posted trail, perhaps could do with a toilet facility along its trail somewhere ? Some cafes, foidstops along at Cambridge and Tamahere. Recommend to all you boomers & your E-bikes fir an easy going and fun days ride, you only live once, just do it

Woke up to a beautiful Saturday and thought we’d go and explore part of the Te Awa trail - so glad we did. We parked a Ngaruawahia and cycled along the river as far as the city centre. A really enjoyable ride with lovely country and river views. Highly recommend stopping for refreshments at the Kirk Cafe - very close to the city centre as the food was fabulous. Looking forward to doing the rest of the trail.

We loved our ride along the mighty Waikato. The bike trail is really well serviced and signposted. Rent your bikes from Electrify River Riders - they’re awesome!!

This river trail is well worth doing because the scenery is really stunning- while the greenery is simply gorgeous on the whole.

We did a section of the northern part of the trail from Ngaruwahia to the CBD.

The trail varies from wide paths to bridges and boardwalks, really interesting! The scenery is stunning including rural and water views.

Not too taxing for an unfit rider like me :)

I hired an e-bike from River Riders and followed the mighty Waikato River through parks, farm land, glades of trees, over bridges and into Hamilton City Centre. Most of the route was riverside. Derek cycles this route easily on a standard bicycle.
