I used to love going here in the late afternoon and sit on the edge of one of the smaller pools.Invariably a platypus would investigate.A lovely picnic area as well. But a flood in 2016 washed a lot of the infrastructure away. You can no longer drive up to the former picnic area.
the Platypus pond is now biologically dead.No water birds and certainly no platypi.
The council has also turned the hill into a multitude of mountain bike tracks.I used to walk over the hill loking at wildflowers particularly orchids.Too dangerous now for this old fellow.
Still a reasonable walk up alongside the Mersey river but this track no longer as good as it used to be.

Reserve now only permanently open to walk ins from carpark at entry.
A huge attraction to mountain bikers of all ages with Wild Mersey just there.

We had visitors from Japan 🇯🇵 who came specifically to see the Duckbill Platypus and I must say they were not disappointed. They visited the forest at dawn on several occasions and were extremely happy to report that they had spotted several Platypus ducking and diving in the Mersey River

The maps available online show that you can drive right up to the 'platypus pond' - this not not so. The road is closed and it is a 10 to 15 minute walk. We went in Jan 2019 and the pond had no water in it. Your best bet is to bring your walking shoes and walk the track along the river, it starts as soon as you pass through the gate to your right. Walk slowly along the river you may see a platypus. We didn't because it was too late in the day (11am).

Probably ur best chance to look for wild platypus, there a a small walk on bitumen road to the pond, yet we could not see any -around 3pm- best is early early in the morning, tours are at 6am, else if ur really looking for some, try platypus house at beauty point which is approx an hour driving east,

Take Hamilton rd, past Old Deloraine rd to Wirawee conservation reserve. The rd into the reserve was still closed but we were able to park and walk.
We walked about 500 metres and found a small track along the river. We saw 2 platypus searching for food within about 10 mins and at about 9:30am. Great experience , loved watching them scruffling around the waters edge.

Not opened to car traffic at this stage due to the flood but you can park and walk through. Very peaceful and beautiful especially at the Platypus Pond. Take your camera. Perfect location for meditation.

We went here for a short walk with our 4 month old to bide some time between breakfast and cider tasting. The reserve has a gravel road that runs along the river bank so a great place for a walk with a stroller. Even though we were here at around 11am we still managed to see a platypus (not quick enough for a photo). Recommended for those with small children as an easy walk.
