If you want a wild a remote experience on an island in California, visit Santa Rosa and camp! This island is accessed via boat, Island Packers from Ventura. You can also charter a plane via Channel Islands Aviation. On the boat, you keep your liquids and camp stove fuel separate. Via boat takes about 3 hours. We saw whales and dolphins on the way out and back, but our crossing was windy and choppy. Once you land at the pier in Santa Rosa, everyone pitches in to get the gear off the boat and up the stairs. Once you have your gear, it's a pretty flat 1.5 miles to walk to the campground. Some people brought a rolling cooler but I do not recommend that. The path has a lot of rocks and soft sand. There are 15 campsites at Water Canyon, which can be reserved through the national park. Each site holds up to 5 people, but when we camped there were only about 20 people total. The campsites each have a wind shelter with a roof, a bear box, and a picnic table. There are several water taps with potable water throughout the campground. This was great for cooking and washing, but it does have a metallic taste, so consider bringing your own drinking water. There is also a sink, and two very nice flush toilets. There is a shower, which was not in service when we were there. Keep in mind that Santa Rosa can be very windy. The wind is not a joke. When we came back from hiking more than one tent was blown over. Use a low-profile tent, with steaks and tie your tent to the wind break. The campground is a short .25 mile walk from the beach. It is also in close distance to many hiking trails. Most of the trails are longer than you think because the distance on the hiking map is calculated from the pier, not the campground. No cellphone service. No stores. No cars, save the NPS trucks. Enjoy wild and remote California!…

The campground is rustic, sort of. There are wind breaks with places to hang and secure your gear. A picnic table, that thankfully isn't bolted down. A water spigot is never that far a way. The bathrooms are some of the nicest I have ever seen at a National Park Campground. There are showers, or rather were... they closed with the drought a few years ago, but have not reopened. The Island Fox will visit. Don't leave food out. It is peaceful, quiet and windy. On what I thought would be a busy week, a third of the sites were empty. You will need to haul in all your gear a mostly flat mile and a half. There isn't a store, or any sensible way to correct mistakes, so pack carefully. I spent only two nights, wish I opted for more. I will be back, after visiting some of the other islands!…
