Let's start with first impressions - from the front, the hotel looks like a charming Victorian building. Unfortunately, as soon as you drive to the overflow car park, you're greeted by a Soviet-era apartment complex glued onto a period property. There is no lighting at all leading up to the property. This negative first impression sets the theme for my stay at this hotel.
Upon arrival we discovered that reception was unmanned. After waiting a while we had to go searching in the bar for someone to check us in. This theme of absent staff would repeat itself throughout our stay.
While waiting, we overheard other disgruntled guests complaining about a broken lift (a major inconvenience for the disabled guest), and another guest complaining about the poor quality of food served to them. In fact, the reception was unmanned most of the time and with the number of complaints they must be getting, I wouldn't be surprised if hiding from guests has become part of their strategy.
We were allocated Room 9 for our stay. The room looked a little dated on first impressions, but a strong sewer smell hit us as soon as we walked in. The door handle into the room was dirty, wobbly and looked generally tired - descriptive words that readily apply to the room and all of the furnishings within.
The carpet in the room hadn't been hoovered in a long while and as the hotel is dog friendly, there were balls of fur or fluff in some areas. The wardrobe was off kilter and lunged strangely towards the room's doorway, as if the inanimate object wanted to escape also. Everything had a layer of dust and the bathroom wasn't cleaned properly. There was space for a smoke alarm on the ceiling but worryingly it wasn't present, which in itself raises serious questions about the legality of the accommodation in terms of health and safety.
We didn't know at the time but our Room 9 seemed to be directly above the kitchen - and later on we had to endure the constant clanging of pots and pans, and people loudly throwing things around until just before midnight.
Adding to our misery, the room had a view of a large, defective extractor unit from our window that emitted a loud, irritating whirring noise EVERY two minutes ALL night long. After speaking to an inexperienced receptionist, we were told that this would end when the kitchens closed somewhere around 9 o'clock (in the evening). It didn't stop, even after 9am the following morning. We considered sleeping in the car just to get some decent kip.
We only serendipitously discovered the presence of a receptionist on our way out of the hotel to look for nearby restaurants, having been told previously during check in that there would be no possibility of us dining there that evening due to it being Boxing Day. Apparently this information was sent to us in an email, which we didn't receive. We could not find anywhere to eat in the village, and the young staff members working in the restaurant were unhelpful and made no attempt to offer any basic provisions. Extremely poor customer service.
Remarkably, a large glass of mediocre house Chardonnay and a double Whitley Neil gin and tonic came to £27.50 from the hotel's bar. Either we were ripped off or they're charging London prices for drinks. You'd think they could reinvest some of that money into improving their facilities, but it's obvious that's not happening here.
After having absolutely no sleep that night, we went downstairs for breakfast, hoping for a sit-down service breakfast. Unsurprisingly the breakfast was a disappointing as the rest of our stay. We had the usual sad line up of terrines containing overcooked, lukewarm cheap food: soggy tater tots, rubbery scrambled eggs, low quality bacon and only the sausages were vaguely edible. Nothing fresh, nothing remotely appetising. At least they're consistent in providing disappointment.
To conclude, our stay at Hollin House Hotel was horrendous. There are so many improvements that need to be made to meet even a basic standard, such is how low the bar is currently set. It's a shame - this could be a great place with better management and more investment, but not at the expense of their guests.
I can only recommend that you drive past this place and keep going.
The food was good and the service was excellent. Everybody enjoyed it and we will certainly be booking again for next year.
We were greeted by a smily waitress who made us instantly feel welcome.
The service, food and overall experience was outstanding.
The character and overall feel was superb.
Highly recommend
The main entrance is the only redeeming feature. Such a shame.
