I was so bothered with the staff (owner included) that I cannot (despite the cleanliness of the place) rate them any better than 2 out of 5. The place was very well kept, i have to say, but the staff was so unprofessional and rude. They serve incredibly overpriced non-guatemalan food (the one typical guate breakfast was greasy, salty and just gross). The people at the desk act like they aren't running a business at all but doing you a favour so I always felt like I was interrupting. I suspect it had a little to do with the fact that when we first arrived, we asked to see the cheapest option they had.
EcoPortal is one of two choices in Semuc Champey, and the closest to the park. Las Marias is the other, and the food is better there, as well as the company. We stayed at EcoPortal in a shared room with a vaulted A-frame style roof. The sides were open for a lot of fresh air, but also insects. The lodge is on the river, so you can tube, dip, etc. EcoPortal connected as with a guide for an adventure trip through Semuc Champey. Definitely worth the money, In conversation, I told one of the staff members I was Jewish. When he overcharged me for the food and I complained, he made a disparaging remark about "Israelis". I recommend staying at Las Marias.
