If you haven’t noted this already, Arch Rock Campground, as well as the only other campground in Valley of Fire - Atlatl Rock Campground - both do not take reservation (except for possibly the group sites). Because they are first come, first serve, DO NOT expect to just arrive there at check out time, and get a spot, at least during their busy season, which is late spring, and all of fall. Arch Campground is gorgeous, but it is absolutely ridiculous to make these campgrounds first come first serve. What is the advantage to this?! Here is the problem with this, aside from the obvious. We arrived there this past weekend, on Friday, at Checkin time, and they were already full. We drove through both campgrounds anyway, just to maybe catch someone leaving. There were a few open spots in both campgrounds (by open, I mean no RV was parked in them), and they had either no rental tag on the post, only a cooler on a table, or some other elementary way of saving them or they had a tag with a check out of that day, with some sort of “save” marker. We were about to park our travel trailer in one such spot, when someone from the site next to it said “oh they said they were coming back today. They are renting on a day to day basis”. It was passed check out time, and no new tag for that day had been placed. No one was around to clarify this, or to oust their menial belongings. We left the park angry, that we had driven all the way there just to turn around. When we left the park, we talked to the gate attendee and told her what we found. She said people are not suppose to do that, yet, there they were. So ridiculous! People come from all over the country to camp at this park. WHY would you NOT offer reservations?! It just screws the people going there. The park and campsites are lovely, but to drive all the way there, only for the park to be full, was beyond disappointing. Just something to know before you go. Maybe during the week would be better, or just brace yourselves that you will have to stay at an off park site (closest one is 30 miles away, btw (and leaves a lot to be desired).…
We stayed 2 nights in the group campground, Beehives spot #1. It was a nice location. The group sites need to be reserved in advance. The group spot had access to pit toilets (no water or hand sanitizer), a water tap, a fire pit, a pavillion with I think 4 tables and two bbq grills. The tents are placed directly on the ground, but it's easy to find a relatively flat surface to pitch the tent. There is ample parking, some paved, and unpaved. I am not sure if site #1 allows RVs, but there were 2 other sites. When we drove to see those sites #2 had RVs, but #3 was empty. Those staying in the group sites can use the restrooms/hot showers in Atlatl campground about 1 mile away. When going in and out of the group site, a metal gate will need to be opened and closed. The restroom building in Atlatl campground is sufficient for the need. I used the ladies bathroom. The toilet area had 4 stalls with two sinks. It was clean, but not well lit, and the toilet paper roll doesn't always roll fast, so either roll it first before going, or bring your own. The sinks work fine. There is no soap, paper towels or air dryer in the bathroom. The showers are separate from the bathroom on the other side of the building. I think there were 4-6 separate stalls. Each stall is a small room with a door that shuts/locks. Each stall has a shower area separated with an area to stand/dry/get dressed. There is no bench to sit on. The back of the door may have one or two set of hooks to put your clothes on and a small shelf to put stuff on. It may be helpful to bring a shower caddy to hang your stuff in the bathroom as the only shelf is a small soap holder. The water pressure was ok, and there was plenty of warm water. We took showers in midday (80 degrees) so hot water was not really needed at that time. The showers were kept relatively clean, but we did wear flip flops while showering. The showers are also free. I think there is one other building in this campground with toilets, but we did not use that.…
