Public Transport around Aysen Region

Hello, I am trying to plan a trip south from Puerto Montt to Villa Cerro Castillo using public transport...

My plan is:

- Ferry Puerto Montt to Chaiten (hitchhike for a day hike in national park nearby)

- Bus Chaiten to Puyuhaipi as this seems like a good base to visit the hanging glacier.

- Bus Puyuhaipi to either Coyhaique or all the way to Cerro Villa Castillo (day hike Laguna Castillo)

- Bus back to Balmaceda to catch flight to Puerto Montt

Firstly does this seem like a good plan? Is it worth the effort and costs? We do not have camping gear so will have to stay in hostels.

Will we miss much by not continuing further south than Villa Cerro Castillo?

And most importantly does anyone know the times and days the buses run on the above routes i suggested?

Muchas Gracias, Lauren

1. Re: Public Transport around Aysen Region

Aysen Region have an extended network of public transport, the problem is that not have a web-based system for schedules, reserves and payment, all is based in personal reservations or a clumsy system to reserve/pay by phone calls and bank transfers, workable for locals but a mystery for foreigners. The season is also important, all the described problems dont apply in low season. Also the frequency is variable, some places have daily frequencies , other twiice or three per week

Said that, going to your schedule

- Ferry Puerto Montt to Chaiten (hitchhike for a day hike in national park nearby)

I guess you take the ferry to save one day as it a night ferry, othewise better the day bus Kemel, as you can appreciate the wonderful scenery

- Bus Chaiten to Puyuhaipi as this seems like a good base to visit the hanging glacier.

only two per week

- Bus Puyuhaipi to either Coyhaique or all the way to Cerro Villa Castillo (day hike Laguna Castillo)

same bus Becker and a local bus, in this case as to locals for schedule

no direct bus Puyuhuapi-Castillo

buses Coyhaique-Cochrane (3 lines) daily and stop in Castillo

- Bus back to Balmaceda to catch flight to Puerto Montt

no bus Castillo-Balmaceda, instead a bus to Coyhaique and there transfers to Balmaceda Airport

dont skip Tranquilo for Marble Caves and Exploradores Glacier, same buses Coyhaique-Cochrane (3 lines) daily and stop in Tranquilo

Remember in summer both buses and accommodations must be reserved in advance

some info about schedules in Aysen, it can be some change in buses firms names, but schedules are similar (Sp)
