I recently traveled to Costa Rica as a part of a study-abroad program organized by my college, and our "base" was in Atenas. One of the students in my group had traveled there the year before, and before we even boarded the plane at home, she said, "When we get to Atenas, we HAVE to go to Gelly's! We ate there every day last year. It's amazing."
Needless to say, the tradition continued. Gelly's quickly became our favorite hangout. The food is excellent, and the atmosphere is incredible. It is open-air, complete with grass turf, and the decor is fun and welcoming. The staff speaks English, some more than others. However, since we were a Spanish immersion class, we wanted to practice, and the staff was MORE than happy to help us with honing our skills. They were patient and willing to teach us new words and work with us on our pronunciation. An added bonus is the fact that Gelly's has reliable Wi-Fi, a treasure for those us wishing to Skype home to our family and friends.
As a whole, Costa Rica is welcoming and friendly to visitors from the United States, and Gelly's is no exception. I plan to return to the country in the future, and Gelly's will be at the top of my to-go list.
