This was our first visit to Gran Canaria and we were keen to avoid the busy tourist resorts, but not be too remote. Finca Tropical was the perfect choice: clean, well equipped, very quiet and private, with a lovely large pool.
As for our hosts - Jesus, Juana and their son Juan - you couldn't wish to meet more friendly, welcoming, generous people, truly likeable and interesting to talk to. Luckily for us, they all speak good English.
Juan met us at the airport, helped us find our hire car, led us to the house (essential in the dark), and then to the best local supermarket, Mercadona. Very kind considering he'd already given up most of his evening.
Jesus came every day to tend to the pool and would pop in to say hello if we were there, sometimes with Juana, as they work on the farm. They gave us fresh fruit every day (mangoes, guavas, dates never tasted so good). Advised on places to visit, including their own favourite unspoilt beaches, which soon became our favourites too. Took us on a tour of the beautiful Barranco de Guayadeque and its cave houses. And one evening invited us to a paella 'cookery lesson' - with Jesus, ably assisted by Juana, stirring the pot while we all looked on, glass in hand. Great fun and delicious paella!
Jesus also showed us an traditional bakery in Ingenio, and a very friendly restaurant, Juventud y Tu, where we had several meals - Canarian cuisine, generous portions, reasonably priced. Happy to recommend.
Hiring a car is essential if you want to explore the whole island. The Finca is well placed for access to the motorway and is only 10 minutes from the airport. Despite that, we were never disturbed by noise from planes.
Heartfelt thanks to Jesus, Juana and Juan - and Mercedes, their adorable little dog - for helping to make our holiday really special. We've come home with lovely memories of Gran Canaria, which has so much variety, interest and beauty to enjoy.
