We stayed at Southgate Courtyard Villa, #19 from February 1 through March 15. The owners were quick to respond to emails. The condo is a spacious one bedroom second floor condo with a small balcony overlooking the yard of the property with a slight glimpse of the beautiful pool, due to trees blocking a larger view. A peek-a-boo view of the ocean is in the far horizon while standing on the balcony. The unit had the amenities we desired. The Internet is password protected, fast, and dependable. (Be sure to get the password before you arrive to avoid having to contact the owner). The cable is a basic package with very few channels. There is always the possibility of paying for an upgrade during your stay, however. It was nice to have an in-unit washer and dryer! The king size bed was comfortable, but the box springs creaked on one side of the bed with every move. Being a light sleeper, that took some getting used to as did the loud refrigerator motor. When we arrived, we had a car which activated the gate to open when exiting the property. However, when our week of car rental was finished, we needed a gate opener (clicker). There was not one in the condo when we arrived, but the grounds caretaker provided us with one when we asked about it. For budget minded travelers like us, the Vitran Bus is easy and cheap to use from this location. You just have to go out the gate and turn left toward Christiansted. Walk past Southgate Plantation Condominiums, continue straight past the junction of highway 60, pass the chain link fence that encloses the electric and cable transponders on your left. Close ahead is a speed limit sign and that is where the bus stops. For only a dollar, you can get into Christiansted and change buses to go to Frederiksted, or you can stay on the bus and go through the countryside as far as La Reine bus terminal. There you can change to a bus to take to Frederiksted as well. The bus will pick you up at the Southgate stop around 8AM and every hour and a half after that until around 5PM weekdays. We made sure we were there 5 minutes before schedule, in case the bus arrived early. The schedule is different on Saturday as buses stop running around 3:30. No buses were running on Sunday when we were there. There was not a printed schedule, so you just have to ask the driver or call the VITRAN station and see if they will help you. The use of the bus was a plus for our length of stay.
We realize there is always the possibility that kitchen items disappear when one rents to others, and that not all cooks desire the same equipment. For our length of stay, there were some things that, if added, would have been nice additions: rubber spatula for scraping out the remaining drop of food in a jar, plastic 2 quart pitcher with lid for making powdered drinks, measuring cups and spoons, vegetable peeler, dish rag and dish drying towel instead of wash cloth and hand towel, smaller baking dish for oven use, more coat hangers, beach towels and chairs, a second chair for the balcony, and a few more or brighter light bulbs. Some bulbs were burned out and too high to reach to replace.
All in all, our stay at Southgate Courtyard Villa #19 was an enjoyable time and we recommend it to others.
