Staying at Meli-Melo was the absolute highlight of our recent visit to Tulum. Cave-diving took us away from the lodge frequently during our stay, and I found myself longing to return as quickly as possible so we could savor our time in the jungle. There is absolutely nothing better than falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle alive at night - it was so soothing, in fact, that we accidentally slept in until 10:30 am on our first night there!
The place is spotless - meticulously cleaned and cared for - and decorated beautifully. The hammock is large and sturdy, and my fiance and I found ourselves arguing over who got to lay in it next! There is a safe in the unit for passports, cash, and other valuables, as well as a small refrigerator for food and water. I particularly loved that fresh drinking water was provided in glass basins, instead of the usual, environmentally disastrous plastic water bottles. The bamboo toothbrushes provided in the bathroom were also clues that Quentin respects the earth and is doing his part to protect it. So appreciated.
For just $10 per person, Quentin will make you the most delicious breakfast you've ever had. Filled with natural ingredients grown in the gardens on site, and prepared with the touch of a gourmet chef's hands, Quentin's breakfasts were some of the best meals we've ever had. Not just in Tulum - anywhere! And he will generously wake up super early to prepare them, in the event you have an early cave-dive or other adventure to get to.
Rumi, a boisterous black cat, and Mocha, a mellow chocolate lab, are always there to greet you upon returning to the lodge. They, like Quentin himself, are absolute sweethearts.
There were only two things that could possibly be construed as negatives - the wifi was a bit spotty at times, and the hot water ran cold fairly quickly in the shower. But you know what? If those are issues that could possibly keep you away from this magical jungle paradise, then good - you aren't worthy of experiencing this oasis! Quentin built the entire property by hand, hiring only plumbers and electricians for help with the technical stuff. I can't even build a birdhouse, much less a divine sanctuary deep within the Mexican jungle, so kudos to Quentin for his amazing talent - and his generosity in sharing it with the world.
If you are on the fence about staying at Meli-Melo, please allow this review to give you the firm push you need into booking it. I guarantee you won't regret it.
