I would not recommend anyone to book this accommodation – both the accommodation and subsequent action (or non-action) of the owner was terrible. The dirt throughout the house; lack of basics; and health & safety risks all contributed to ruining what should have been a fantastic trip to Iceland.
Firstly the really serious H&S things……
It looked as if someone had been doing some DIY around the house. The light switch was hanging off the wall with bare wires in the room we were directed to go to get spare sheets etc – as we did not know where the switch was and we entered in the dark – we had to fumble to find the switch. It was most fortunate that no-one managed to electrocute themselves. Photo attached. There was also a light socket in the hall which had wires hanging from it – presenting a potential electrocution or fire risk. Photo attached.
Now the frustrating things……
Things were bad from the start and then quickly went downhill! We were given the wrong keycode to get access to the house in the first place, when we phoned after trying for 20 minutes in the rain and cold, the owner was quite dismissive and we were made to feel we were intruding on him, when in fact it was us that were at distinct inconvenience due to the wrong information being provided by him. He acknowledged I had the wrong code (the one that was in his email) but was still complaining to me that someone had changed it and not told him. I am not sure who had changed the code, but it certainly wasn’t the cleaner, as they had been nowhere near the property for a considerable time!
There was various things advertised eg underfloor heating – this wasn’t switched on and there were no instructions on how to switch it on. Hot tub outside – that was something we were definitely looking forward to. Unfortunately the cover was left half off so it was full of dirt, leaves etc – no instructions were left either so even if we had the tenacity to clean it (oops sorry we couldn’t do that due to the lack of cleaning materials), then we still couldn’t use it as we didn’t know how to fill it or switch it on.
Next the disgusting things……
The place was filthy and was really so uninhabitable that we had to leave and find alternative accommodation after one night, the only reason that we stayed the one night was due to us hoping the owner was going to come and put some things right – however despite trying to contact him from around 7:00 pm he finally sent an email after midnight which suggested that I might find some toilet paper in a locked cupboard out on the balcony – locked therefore how could I open it, and outside in the pitch dark to wander around. By this time it was too late to find somewhere else.
The dishes were in the dishwasher – which had not even been switched on. There were no cleaning materials, washing up liquid or cloths of any kind. Worktops were filthy - we had to use face wipes to clean down some of the surfaces to make it a bit hygienic. The cooker was manky, when the oven was switched on belches of smoke came out as the stuff that was spilt on it previously burned off – it was not useable and had obviously not been cleaned for some time. The fridge had old stuff in it and the sour smell was overpowering. There were no bins anywhere in the house.
At the time of booking 6 months ago it was advertised as having bed linen and towels provided (the website has now been changed). The beds were badly stained, fusty, smelly (photos attached) with dirty pillows and duvets found stored in one room, but no bed linen was found anywhere in the house. There were dead flies on one of the beds.
The toilets had not been cleaned, one photo shows the dirt and hair which had collected in the shower drain which illustrated it hadn’t been cleaned for some time. There was no toilet paper nor towels in either bathroom. The fantastic 360 shower that you see on some sites, doesn’t exist in the house. The floors in both toilets were sticky. There were no hairdryers anywhere in the house, which is a standard item that you typically find in holiday accommodation – that wasn’t important as we couldn’t use the shower due to the dirt in the first place and our inability to dry ourselves afterwards due to the lack of towels!
The level of dust around the place was really bad, with handprints in it. The floors were so dirty throughout you had to keep your shoes on all the time and you could feel them sticking to the floor surface due to the dirt.
I have been to Iceland a few times before but it was a first for my friends – this is not the standard that I have witnessed elsewhere, with both the accommodations and people being first class.
