We thoroughly enjoyed our week stay in Montevideo, especially because of the very friendly and helpful staff in the attached hostel. The location is very convenient for seeing the Ciudad Viejo (old city) on foot--great view of the harbor and the container ship loading activity from the LR window since you're essentially across the street on the roof of a 3 story building--far enough away to not have noise problems--the loading activity is amazingly quiet. The building is interesting in itself, being an historic renovation. The immediate neighborhood has great potential, but the ongoing gentrification results in shuttered shops, a couple gutted buildings, and graffiti and litter in the streets. We felt safe walking the area, but there aren't many pedestrians after dark. We found the apt. to be more than adequate for our needs, but the restoration has some relatively minor rough edges that, if improved, could result in an excellent accommodation. A note of caution, we had no problems (we're way past retirement age!!), but the access to the apt from the first floor involves two stories of a tight-spiral staircase with handrail--not good for anyone with a walking problem. We would definitely consider staying here again should we return.
