I was recommended Swanage by a friend in the year above who stayed with Alan and I am so glad I followed his advice. Alan is truly one of the friendliest and warmest people you will ever meet. Joburg can seem like quite a daunting place to stay but Alan was quickly able to make it feel like a second home. I know it can seem quite far from Bara and Charlotte in comparison to some other accommodation options but considering how lovely the neighbourhood is and how safe it feels I can promise you that its well worth the extra few minutes in the car. Alan also organises a safari to Pilanesberg National Park (where is a part time ranger) which is a must do and I would recommend sending him a message to find out when he is planning a trip so that you can organise you elective around it.

I wanted to take my time to talk about my experience of staying with this wonderful man- Dr Alan Peter, a priest, physician and most importantly a wonderful human being. I was whole heartedly welcomed in his house on the first day, he treated us with halal meat on a Sunday lunch and made me & my husband so much as home. He is like a family member, god father who guided us through out on how to be safe and enjoy our experience in Johannesburg. Most importantly he guided me on how to make the most of the safari's in Botswana- most memorable experience of my life. His binoculars to sight animals and rains coats for Victoria falls so we dont get wet, made me admire him a lot more for looking out for us so much during our holiday. You will not regret your decision of staying in his place which is equipped to host medical students and his guidance just makes your living in Johannesburg far more easier. You should have a car in Jo berg just because its a lot more easier and safer for a foreign student. Bara is 25 min drive away and I throughly enjoyed my morning drives. I can't wait to be back to join him on his 14 days safari, addicted to safaris- incase you cant tell already. I give him 7 stars for his hospitality and willingness to help medical students and guide them. He would go extra length to help you, and believe me you definitely wont ever forget your experience of elective in Bara- fantastic place to learn.

Perfect place to stay!
I stayed at Swanage along with 2 friends on our medical elective in February - March 2020. Alan and all of the Swanage family make you feel so at home and safe in Johannesburg. The accommodation is well located for both Bara and Joburg Gen hospitals as well as to various areas to eat/drink/explore whilst in Jo'burg.
The accommodation is clean and comfortable. There is kitchen space and cupboards for everyone, a large dining table for family meals and a swimming pool! The area of Sandringham is very safe and the accommodation is gated.
The safari with Alan is a MUST and I would really recommend a trip to the Drakensburg for some hiking.
Staying here also gives you the chance to meet other medical elective students and make some friends for life - we're all Alan's swans!
Thank you Alan, and we'll be back soon...

I stayed at Swanage for 2 month during my medical elective at Jo’burg gen Hospital.
I can remember the weeks before my trip and to be honest i was a bit anxious to travel all by myself to South Africa. But as soon as I have arrived here I forgot all my worries. Alan is such a lovely person and the whole Swanage family made me feel welcomed immediately.
I had a very good time at the hospital and gained a lot of experience in trauma. But besides that I had also an amazing time outside the hospital like a trip to Cape Town or hiking in Drakensberg. But the highlight of my time here and for sure one of the most amazing weekends in my life was the Safari with Alan!
Like many others before me I wanna say thank you Alan for opening your home and heart for us students!
Will see you in few years for one of your big safaris!

The very best of Johannesburg
There's nothing like being part of the Swanage family. From family dinners to the most amazing safari glamping with Alan (who's also a park ranger and has a bottomless wealth of knowledge), there is really no better place to stay in Johannesburg.
The rooms are clean and Alan really goes above and beyond to provide for Swanage. Although it may be slightly further from Baragwanath than other options, the surrounding area is one of the safest suburbs in Johannesburg, and it's one straight drive on the highway to hospital.
Swanage is not just an accommodation, it's an experience, and it's a family. Already thinking about when I'll be back!

Aufgrund diverser Empfehlungen haben wir, 2 Anästhesistinnen, uns während unseres Praktikums im Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital bei Alan und seinen Schwänen eingemietet und wurden mit Familienanschluss belohnt ☺️
Ob Familydinner, gemeinsame Safarierlebnisse oder Möglichkeit Erfahrungen auszutauschen Swanage ist der perfekt Ort dafür!

Home away from home
I spent 4 weeks with Alan while on elective in Joburg. He made us all feel very welcome, and there is a great sense of community there. I wasn't able to make it to one of his safaris due to timing and lack of availability on my part, but people who went said it was excellent, and the value was second to none.

Memories and friends for life
Coming to Joburg for a medical elective is a daunting prospect for anyone.
Swanage provides the most perfect location to be based. It's safe, and full of like minded people who I will endeavor to stay in contact with.
The famous swanage safari was incredible, and I recommend everyone to make time for it.
Alan, thanks for your wonderful hosting skills and memories I'll have for life

Superb!
Swanage is the ultimate place for med students in Joburg. I've spent 5 weeks at this place for an elective at Joburg General Hospital and would choose Swanage again if I came for another elective. Lovely people from all over the world and always good vibes! Besides that, Alan is a wonderful host who will help you with any problem.
Swanage is definitely unique in Joburg and there is no way you cannot enjoy your stay here!

Best Place to Stay When You are in Joburg for Elective
if you are reading this, you have found Swanage and hence can stop searching further. There is no better place to stay in Joburg, especially when from medical field. Alan not only opens his wonderful house for you, but also his heart. You can find a second family in South Africa and thus not only a place to stay, but a place to feel and be home. Alan and his family are utmost helpful with every issue you might have, and you can easily get in contact with other students or doctors from all over the world. This community is one-of-a-kind. Don’t hesitate and be part of it!
