Villa Chandra nearly ruined our trip to Bali. We checked out early and lost $600 because the place made us ill (see below) and is not "luxury" whatsoever. It is also not "romantic" because the owners have no respect for privacy and walk in whenever they please. Poor value for money, unsafe for children, and worst of all, an owner (who also manages Villa Surya) who did not care for the safety nor privacy of our family.
There are so many great villas in Bali--Villa Chandra and Villa Surya are not among them.
This place is not "luxury" as the ad suggests--Villa Chandra is more like a hot, sticky, cheap ecolodge in an overgrown garden, with critters (huge spiders, lizards, cockroaches, red ants) EVERYWHERE . Only one space (the unattractive downstairs bedroom) has A/C.
IF YOU HAVE ANY SORT OF HAY FEVER, POLLEN, OR TREE ALLERGIES, DO NOT STAY HERE. My husband and six-month-old baby had such bad respiratory problems that we asked to leave after three nights (of 10 nights). We hoped to get just a night or two refund. Mark refused to negotiate and returned none of our money. He did help us obtain medicine, but this--the strongest steroidal treatment--did not work.
When I did leave and attempted to share my feedback of the place with Mark, he slammed the door in my face in front of his staff while I was carrying my six-month-old son.
IF YOU HAVE SMALL KIDS, DO NOT STAY HERE. There are 5- to 15-foot drops with no railings in the upstairs bedroom, swimming pool , stairs, and the dining/living area. We couldn't take our eyes of our kids for a second. Beyond that, there were huge spiders on the beds, ants in the bathrooms, and a hornets nest over the pool.
IF YOU WANT PRIVACY, DO NOT STAY HERE. The owner Mark, who stays on site when his other property, Villa Surya, is not rented, enters the grounds whenever he wishes (usually wearing only a sarong). We booked this remote location to get away from people but instead had Mark and his partner Petra coming in and out any time they wished, from early in the morning until late at night. Some guests may enjoy this sort of hands-on, over-involved presence. We did not.
Many more problems beyond this that I won't get into (misleading pricing on food; raw bread served for breakfast with overcooked eggs; very unattractive dining/living area; and more). All in all, a horrible experience. We were thrilled to leave.
