Michael, the owner of "Casa "Mar", was the epitome of the perfect landlord. Living nearby he was always able to resolve any problems, or answer any queries that might arise. Set on the outskirts of a smart suburb of Orotava, the apartment is the lower third of a bungalow type building. It is accessed from the on-street parking by way of a corridor that ends in 14 steps. Facing North-East, the view from the patio looks out over mostly undeveloped ground, to the Atlantic.
Inside, the rooms are adequately furnished in an 'Ikea' style manner, and the galley type kitchen contains all that is necessary for a self-catering holiday. The two bathrooms are spacious, and bottled gas efficiently takes care of the hot water system. The patio ( half boarded, half tiled), has a 3 by 2 metre plunge pool; and the B.B.Q. area has a built in oven next to a table and chairs. The direct sun was lost round about 4pm, as it set behind the upper storey roof.
A brisk 20 minute walk will take you to quite a reasonably sized "Spar" super-market, but be warned, going back is uphill!. We found a hire car a necessity in this respect, especially as a huge shopping complex was only a 5 minute drive in the direction of Puerto de la Cruz.
When travelling around we were enchanted with Loro Parque. Sensitively placed in a tropical setting, the beautiful gardens housed and displayed to full advantage many species of parrot, numerous animals, and the best Sea World arena yet. The meticulous planning, investment and care of those animals has to be seen to be believed. Even down to the Hospital/Laboratory, with vets on 24 hour call. The 10 minute drive to Puerto de la Cruz, and a 1000 car free parking along the Esplanade, allows you then to browse the town. The Martianez Swimming pool complex, offers a complete day out, with its different sized pools, loungers and little restaurants. Further afield is Candelaria having large statues of the Guanche warriors on the sea front. There is also Bajamar with the natural pools fronting the Atlantic; and on the other side of the Island , North of Santa Cruz, are the golden sands of San Andres.
Yes, we would thoroughly recommend this holiday rental as a comfortable base from which to enjoy all that the Island has to offer.
