Oar Island is one of the thousands of islands, large and small, that fill the rugged ocean coast of Maine. One of the many picturesque islands in Muscongus Bay, Oar Island can be found midway along Maine's coast, about 1 ¼ hour drive east of Portland. It covers about 42 acres. On the entire island there are only 2 houses, rentable by the day or week, either together or separately. The Cottage and the Cabin sit just ten to twenty feet from the water. The island is completely wooded, with fine views of Muscongus Bay and its many other islands to the south, and of the Camden Hills to the northeast. A mile of ocean frontage, much of it deep water even at low tide, an all-tides boat landing, trails, coves, wildlife, free seafood to gather, and above all complete privacy, are yours when you visit Oar Island. You have an entire domain to yourself. Nobody can disturb you. You have crossed the moat and pulled up the drawbridge behind you. Samoset, known to all Massachusetts children as one of the two Indians who greeted -- in English! -- the Pilgrims at their Plymouth settlement in March, 1621 held Oar Island as part of his home territory. In 1625 Samoset deeded the Pemaquid peninsula, including Oar Island, to the English settler John Brown.

THE best vacation money can buy
I have had the pleasure of staying at Oar Island twice now and each time was THE best vacation!! The host Larry is extremely friendly and accommodating. The island itself is absolutely gorgeous and has beautiful, unique wild life such as soft moss and various colors of flora. This is truly a unique stay and I plan to come back again and again- the peace and serenity are beyond anything you can describe in words or put in a photo. It is incredible to wake up to the view of the Atlantic Ocean- plus the nearby dock has yummy lobsters and is a short boat ride away!

Almost Heaven
Our family rented this property three summers-August 2016, 2017, and 2018. It is rustic and welcoming. Wake to coffee (thanks to wife) on the porch with morning lobster boats pulling traps just off your front yard, relish a nap on the porch swing, and venture out on a moonless night for the stars on the pier. And if you are adventurous, pack a lunch and use the skiff to visit the nature preserve on Hog Island; pick blueberries on Bremen Long island; and enjoy the raspberries, remote sandy beach, and historical open church and graveyard on Louds Island. Visit Round Pond with its classic sailing craft and homemade ice cream at a shack just a short walk up from the dock. You can take a meal at Broad Cove where you arrive or buy fresh lobster and clams at Broad Cove or at the local watermen's coop. Oar island is also kid and pet friendly with plenty of nature to explore. Our extended family just got too big to return and we miss it.

Relaxing Family Vacation
We had a wonderful stay at Oar Island. We enjoyed hiking around the island and hanging out on the rocks, watching the lobster boats go by. The Wesson's were easy to deal with and we enjoyed visiting with them while we were on the island. Our dog could not get enough swimming - he loved it too, although the water was cold! We saw seals in the bay while we were out motoring around in the boat. If you want a place to come and unplug from your busy life and recharge your soul, this is the place!

perfect
We love Oar Island. It is the perfect vacation place for families with children of different ages, or just a couple. There is hiking, sunning, relaxation, but mostly what we love about Oar Island is the isolation. It is an adventure as well, since the only way to get there is by the little motorboat. It is a getaway for certain kinds of people; but if you prefer the Marriott type of stay, this is not that kind, it is much more "out-doorsy".

Delightful week in Muscongus Bay.
Wonderful, relaxing stay in a beautiful spot of the world. We rented both cabins and had the island to ourselves. Be prepared for a rustic, but charming experience.

Great Out of the Way Vacation
My wife and I have been going to Oar Island for years. We absolutely love the Island and the surrounding area. We've stayed in the cottage and the cabin as well. We prefer the cottage but the cabin has it's own unique charm. The island is a beautiful place to relax and truly unwind. If you're looking for nightlife this is not the place to go. It's secluded, quiet and peaceful. There are great towns in close driving distance for antiquing and entertainment. I can highly recommend it if you're looking for something unique and a bit on the rustic side. The owners are also wonderful to deal with.

Light out for the territories
As Hucklberry Finn famuously said, "but I reckon I got to light out for the territory ahead of the rest, because aunt Sally she's going to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. I been there before." If you want to get away from the structure of your own "Aunt Polly" and escape civilization for a week or two, I can highly recommend a trip to Oar Island. My family of 4, including one 8-year old Tom Sawyer in training, had a magical week on the island. My son fell in with the three sons of the other family inhabiting the island and I barely saw him for the whole week -- just flashes through the trees and waves as he ran through the woods and explored the chilly waters for crustaceans. My daughter enjoyed the quiet beauty of the place, especially the lushly moss and lichen carpeted interior of the island. We built fairy houses and picked blueberries. My wife and I relaxed into the rhythms of nature -- the movement of the sun and the cycle of the tides -- and cut all connections to the world outside that which we could personally see, hear and feel. In short, a week of bliss.

Amazing Get away Vacation in the Maine Coast
My fiance and I stayed for a week at the cottage (the smaller house) on Oar Island. We had an amazing time! We drove from Portland and were greeted by a very friendly man at the dock near the island. He (apologies for not remembering his name!) helped us load up the outboard motor boat with our things and told us the best route to the island. You can see the island from the dock but you have to navigate around some rocks and buoys. The house itself was very well kept. Mind you, it's a cottage on an island so don't expect luxury but it was clean, well maintained and had all the basics--spices, pots/pans, TP, etc. Occasionally, we'd run into the husband/wife/child staying at the larger house at the dock but we never heard them from our cottage, so it really felt like we had the whole island to ourselves. We spent evening sitting onthe screened porch, harvested fresh mussels from the island's shore for dinner, and headed to town for groceries, a beer and some oysters whenever we thought we were going to go stir crazy. One night, we took the boat & some wine out along the bay and just sat there enjoying the calm. All of a sudden, seals started popping their little heads up above the water & we think we may have seen a dolphin too--this was just 10 minutes from the island! We plan on coming back when we have kids, and I'm sure it'll be very different (noisier!) experience but equally amazing.
