This cottage is pokey. At 5 feet 9 I am no giant but managed to bang my head 12 times during our week’s holiday. My wife’s superior stature meant she managed to duck slightly more successfully and only brained herself 8 times. Her back suffered as result.
On the first evening we decided to cook. I am used to cooking with gas. You turn the gas on, light it and then set it to the desired temperature. With the electric hobs at Panteg, you could turn the hobs on, but no sooner had you done that, the things faded off again. Perhaps this is some sort of safety feature, but it was certainly frustrating.
After tea we decided to sit down in the lounge. Both the sofa and arm chair were lumpier than my old school semolina. It was impossible to stay comfortable for longer than 5 minutes. Everything smelled musty and felt damp and frankly belonged in the dump.
When we retired to bed, the room smelt faintly of urine. My wife was worried about leaving our two young daughters in their little bunk beds in their room because the smell of damp was so strong it made us cough. We actually gave our daughter extra asthma medication as a precaution.
The following morning, we attempted to look up things to do in the area using the “broadband”. It reminded me of 1990s dial up. It just lacked that ringtone as the pictures slowly appeared pixel by pixel. Usually this might not be an issue but during covid working internet is important so as to check if attractions are actually open.
As the rain poured down on the third day, water flowed in through the back door and flooding the kitchen. As it poured heavily for the second time that day my wife went out to check the drain and realised that the leaf guard was the wrong way up and was stopping the water from going down the drain. She eventually had to use the mop handle to unblock the drain before mopping up the kitchen again. We spent the rest of week feeling like we were on flood watch.
The fridge was tiny and could not accommodate more than single pints of milk. We ended up piling the food on up in the bottom of the fridge. The freezer compartment was disproportionately large. There is plenty of space to install a much larger, more practical fridge/freezer.
There was no dishwasher, but there was space for one.
On a positive note bathroom was nice and Covid masks were a thoughtful and useful touch, but I have never appreciated the comforts of home so much before in my entire life. We left early, never to return to PANTsEG.
