The Good: This place is worth it for the gorge in the backyard alone. Ellen and Jeremy gave us full use of all of their grounds (firepit, pond, backyard, and the stream with their very own little 'gorge'). We enjoyed taking the short (but sometimes steep and rocky - be careful) walk to the 'gorge'. It was breathtakingly beautiful. We made coffee in the cottage with the fresh coffee beans (bonus!), and brought down our thermal mugs filled with java. We sat on the almost too perfect ledges (very shallow) and ate our muffins and drank our coffee while basking in the sun and listening and watching the birds bathe and play in the stream. We kicked off our shoes and walked upstream to a gorgeous and massive stone bridge. This place is photographer's dream. This was most definitely our favorite part of our stay. Other things we enjoyed were the board games provided, and old movies. The proximity of the Cottagette to local wineries and vineyards was ideal. I don't think we could have picked a better location. Of course, our hosts (Ellen and Jeremy) were wonderful too. They gave us our privacy, but were available for anything we might need. The Cottagette was well equipped with pots, pans, extra towels, containers, dish soap, books, towels, toiletries, and even mints on our pillows upon arrival (adorable touch). The wide plank wood floors and eclectic collection of decorations brought a charming touch to the place. We had no issues with the cable, the DVD player, wifi, or any appliances provided.
The bad: I'd like to say that although the building itself is in need of some improvements, we had an excellent time. So, upon arrival we got settled in and noticed a not-so-pleasant odor... (fishy smell). We chalked it up to the old air conditioner that was in the window. It didn't smell horrible, just not pleasant. It was an old air conditioner which worked very well, but I think that could be the culprit. Another small issue was there were some ants and spiders, (which is to be expected out in the country... so I can't complain really). The water is fed from a natural spring. Although Ellen and Jeremy assured us they have been drinking it for 30 years, we did not feel comfortable drinking it. My husband tried it, and said it didn't taste very pleasant. We purchased some bottled water, and solved that 'problem' easily. The plumbing seemed to work fine, was just very noisy. The only thing I think we really did not enjoy was the smell, and the smell of the towels. We would normally bring our own, but happened to forget them this trip. We used the ones provided, which I'm sure were clean, but had a stale smell. We read the previous reviews about the uncomfortable bedding, so we decided to bring our mattress topper, and found that we had no issue with that.
Overall, we had an excellent time, and it was a pleasure to stay here. Ellen and Jeremy were a fun duo. We would definitely stay again.
