Room 101 is absolutely perfect…if you wish to not enjoy your holidays at all and keep arranging things like in your normal life.
The apartment is quite spacious, and has room for 4 people, and has most of the utilities advertised, however, you must not think this is any normal holiday, you are going to no-stress island after all.
So, first things first, when you arrive at the apartment, you must not forget to pay the taxi driver that the owner arranges for you as he keeps the key.
If you are lucky, you arrive during the week, so the cleaning will have taken place. Even though we arrived during the middle of the week, after 16h00 – according to the owner to give time to the ladies to clean(!!), the apartment is and was quite dirty.
Don´t ever take it up yourself to ask the cleaning ladies when they will show up the next time, they will announce themselves by standing in the middle of the living room with just a knock on the door as a warning (doorbell is not working). No-one knows when they will show or if they show, nor what they will do, they themselves have no clue either. If you do dare asking when they will show up next time to them directly, all cleaning will be suspended by the owner, as you´ve just verbally abused them (quite the adventure when they have no idea what you just asked them, the moment someone talks they seem to lose all memory of English and even Portuguese), and no-one is able to tell you how you´ve abused people.
We directly tried to send an email to the services that would provide these (no internet inside the apartment so it took some work). 2 weeks later we are still awaiting a reply. Trying to keep the owner in the loop even though he dismisses every complaint, he starts replying on a CC, and is unable to grasp what Is going on, even though we complaint before about the abominable state of the apartment. Sending pictures of this to the owner results in him only replying after a reminder, that he will make a report of it. To give a brief overview: there are 2 bathrooms, both shower units have black spots on them (probably mold, very unhealthy) faucets have never been cleaned before etc. The dining room table had unclean spots on them, and when we left they were still there. One of the many papers you receive will tell you that cleaning is your own responsibility, however, if that is the case, why would cleaning services be advertised and what are the ´cleaning´ ladies doing in the apartment? After both times the cleaning ladies had been in the apartment, we found ants all over, even in the bathrooms and bedrooms (on the front side of the apartment.
The first time the ladies came, they knocked on the door, and stepped inside, we asked politely if it was possible to come back the next day as we had just gotten back from a short trip to another island, the ladies answered this was no problem at all, and 3 hours later we received an angry email from Mr. Fox that we denied access to the apartment – as we just came back it seemed our luggage had exploded, so even if the ladies would want to clean it was impossible. But now the best part comes: as we believe you cannot clean when every surface is occupied, we made sure the ladies could access every surface in the apartment, meaning, the only personal things in the rooms were the suitcases, this did not, however, encourage them in any way to clean, and while we were there the only things done were: bringing 4 towels for 2 persons for the whole week, changing the bedsheets – we took them off as we wanted new sheets, noticed the week before it were the same sheets we had already used, they just made the beds, swept some floors, mopped the floors as far as we could observe (not the whole apartment), they start in the kitchen and then mop to the bed- and bathrooms, which brought a whole colony of ants with them.
Although Internet and Wifi are advertised, you shouldn´t actually hope to have access to this inside the apartment, you´ll only have a public wifi in the public areas, notifying the owner about this only results in you being called a liar, and after about 6 emails back and forth, according to him there is Wifi inside the apartment…but where is still a mystery.
For the price you pay per week in the apartment (€500-,) , please do not expect to have spot-free or even whole sheets, the mostly white sheets come with blue ink spatter and with sizeable holes in them. Also, do not expect more then 2 towels per person per week! Such luxuries only exist in hotels, and as Mr. Fox so colorfully explained, this is not a hotel. The promised ocean view is probably there…we could only check after a week when a key was delivered so the windows could be opened, which in turn allowed for the blinds to be able to be opened, though to actually be able to see the ocean you must be on the floor above this apartment.
Would love to give a review about the resort, however, it is like a ghost city, there is 1 supermarket, in which daring to ask why there is no price on vegetables the reply is: ‘if you don´t like it, get the **** out of here´.
All in all, what was supposed to be a relaxing 3 weeks in an apartment, turned out to be a constant and growing irritation
